My grandpa came across this picture in an old newspaper with me and my brothers at Floydada’s Pumpkin Day. I’m the one on my knees at the first bucket. I can still remember the sheer number of pumpkins – everywhere – and the largest pumpkin contest with small-sized-car pumpkins.
After her funeral, I went by Mamarie’s house one last time and found this very used garden hoe that has been filed down over and over again having survived so many uses. I definitely don’t work hard in her terms.
Today my great grandmother passed away. Born in 1908, having lived nearly a century, she has seen and been through plenty. I have some very fond memories of her and the stories she told—working in the fields, half-court-dirt-floor basketball, and more.
