Homemade Book Binding

Over the weekend I tried to make a bound book.  This little project was motivated out of my displeasure in reading book-length quantities of text spanned across 17 plus inches of a monitor.  My eyes get lost traveling back and forth so long a distance.  Plus, I love to interact with the text by taking notes and highlighting as I read.  So I print out any decently sized work to read on paper instead of screen.

Thus the project of a homemade bound book.  Here are a few pictures of the process.

Bears Just Talk

Kadence: No, daddy, you’re a bear.

Me: Roaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!

Kadence: No, bears don’t say that, they just talk…

Me: They just talk?

Kadence:  Yeah they say, “What are you doing Goldilocks?”

AIG Bailout Illustrated

I always love a good visual illustration to make it easier to see what’s really going on—as in the case of the AIG Bailout where we’ve conveniently robbed our left hand to pay our right and thus delay the inevitable even further.

Putting the Fleece Out

God is continually intriguing. Look at how He responds to Gideon’s act of putting out the fleece.

The outcome of Gideon’s testing of Yahweh is most remarkable. Despite previous prohibitions on testing Yahweh, despite Gideon’s faithless disposition, and despite the questionable strategy, Yahweh responds favorably and reassures Gideon of his support. John H. Walton

Shaking Hands

shaking-hands-inspiration

Last week I got to take a picture of two people shaking hands for a marketing piece.  This first image is the inspiration, and my finished image is below.  I’ve also included the setup shot for those of you who are curious what it took—lots of light and white.

The Crisis of Credit Visualized

Do you ever wonder—in simple terms—what happened to the economy?  This video does a great job of boiling it down.  It’s definitely worth the few minutes it takes to watch.  Or, for a more humorous explanation, you can read about Heidi’s bar in Detroit in Derivatives Explained.

Tower of Babel

 stairway-to-earth

“…the tower [of Babel] was not built so that people could ascend to heaven, but so that deity could descend to earth.” — John Walton

Interestingly in Gen 11:5, “…the Lord came down to see the city and the tower…”

Sit Down and Eat

I’ve been reading through John recently, and just couldn’t help but wonder how the scene played out for those still standing in John 6 when Jesus walks by to give them some food, and…keeps on walking.  He simply asked that they sit down and then gave those who were seated as much as they wanted.  (John 6:10-11)

But what about those still standing?  Am I starving but too proud, strong, impatient, hurried, selfish, embarrased, and ashamed to sit down and eat?

Andrea: Let’s paint our kitchen!

Me: Okay, who’s blow money are we going to spend…mine?

Andrea: Yes.

Kirk: What?

Andrea: He who speaks first loses.

Painting Our Kitchen

We thought our kitchen was kind of boring.

So we decided to paint it the perfect shade of red.  That is, until we got about half way through a gallon of paint…

Yikes!  For some reason, this red just doesn’t go with our kitchen.  We’re going back to kaki—at least for now.

I’m Too Skinny?

It’s official, my weight—or lack thereof—is costing me.  My Life Insurance quote came back $24.50/mo higher just because I don’t weigh enough.  I was stunned.  The agent was stunned.  This was a first for him.

And I actually thought I’ve started to put on a few pounds…seriously, I have.

I measure in at 5′11″ and weight 127lb (up 5lb from last year).  And just in case you haven’t seen me in a while, here’s a recent picture my wife took.

Am I seriously that skinny?

I normally avoid talking about my weight with anyone (for obvious reasons), but this was just too crazy.

Free Car

We’ve had one car for the past 2 years.  At times it was difficult or inconvenient, but we really enjoyed the time that we spent together as a family.

Well, now we have two little cars.  Last week someone just gave me a car.  I grew up hearing stories of people who gave away cars, but now I actually know someone who’s done the same.

Thanks for the ride!
